[ARCHIVED] Plan Ahead & Take Transit as Heavy Traffic is Expected in Truckee This Weekend

With fresh snowfall in the Sierras, Truckee is bracing for a busy weekend on the roads as visitors and residents flock to local ski resorts. The combination of heavy ski traffic, winter road conditions, and peak travel times means delays are expected throughout the region, particularly on Interstate 80, State Route 89, and local roads leading to Palisades Tahoe and Northstar California.

Tips for Navigating Weekend Traffic

To help reduce congestion and improve safety, the Town of Truckee and Truckee Police Department encourage travelers to plan ahead and consider alternative transportation options.

  • Carpool when possible, to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
  • Use the Park & Ride Shuttle Service for easy resort access without parking hassles.
  • Avoid peak travel times, especially midday on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Be Winter Ready by ensuring your vehicle has chains, snow tires, or AWD/4WD, and drive with caution in icy conditions.

No Parking Pass? No Problem!

There are several transit options available to get to the ski resorts stress-free:

  • Park & Ride to Palisades Tahoe – Located at 11603 Donner Pass Road between the Tahoe Truckee School District office and Truckee High.
  • Park & Ride to Northstar California – Located at Lift Workspace at 10266 Truckee Airport Road.
  • TART Fixed Route Service – Provides easy access to both resort base areas via SR 89 and SR 267.
  • NEW: Sugar Bowl/Donner Summit Shuttle – Operating daily through April 20, this shuttle connects Truckee and Donner Summit. Service will be canceled when Old 40 is closed.
  • Truckee TART Connect – This fare-free, point-to-point service does not serve resorts directly but operates from 6:30 am to Midnight, providing convenient access to Park & Ride lots, TART regional routes, and the Donner Summit Shuttle. It’s also a great option for getting to après-ski activities, dining, and local events.

Help Keep Truckee Moving

With traffic expected to peak throughout the weekend, local officials ask both visitors and residents to minimize unnecessary travel during peak times if possible and to carpool where available. Staying off the roads during the busiest hours helps reduce congestion and keeps roadways safer for everyone.
