[ARCHIVED] Legacy Trail Awarded 2024 Public Project of the Year

Last month the Truckee Legacy Trail was selected by the Urban Land Institute as the 2024 Public Project of the Year at the Sacramento Vision Honors Awards.  It is quite an honor for this trail to be recognized since different phases of the trail have been in construction over the past 20 years with the easternmost point of the trail in the Glenshire subdivision and connection to parks and neighborhoods throughout town.  The most recent phase of the trail that was constructed is a scenic connection through the Stonebridge Properties along portions of Donner Creek, Cold Creek, and passing by several ponds in the Coldstream Development area, which provides the connection from the Deerfield neighborhood to the westernmost point of the trail at Donner Lake (Donner Memorial State Park).

The Public Project of the Year Award recognizes a project that demonstrates exceptional achievement of best practices in development. The winning project is deemed to represent the highest standards of achievement in the development industry with the following criteria:

  • Achieves a high standard of excellence in all areas-architecture, planning and design, construction, amenities, economics, and management, etc.
  • Demonstrates innovation, market success, and meets the current and future needs of its surrounding community.
  • Considered transformative, innovative, sustainable and a catalyst for economic development.
  • Provides lessons, strategies, or techniques that other communities can replicate or adapt.

Our Senior Civil Engineer, Mike Vaughan, was able to travel to Sacramento to accept the award before he retires later this month. This was fitting, given his leadership in the construction of Phase 5 of the Truckee River Legacy Trail, significant contributions to Truckee’s development, and decades of commitment to his Engineering team, the Town of Truckee organization, and the Truckee community.
